Self Advocates Committee

This group assists people to learn the steps to independence, how to obtain information, and how to make informed choices.

Topics of discussion may include:

  • Diversity
  • Right and Responsibilities
  • How to find Supports
  • Problem Solving
  • Steps to Reaching Success
  • Mental Health
  • Rules and Laws
  • What is Consent
  • How to Obtain Information

Participants have also been learning other important issues such as:

  • Covid – What is it, how to deal with it, and keeping ourselves safe
  • Vaccines – information gathering and making informed decisions
  • Managing our thoughts and emotions
  • What is Stress and how to deal with it. (Self Care)
  • How to be Happy (Self Love)
  • Self Confidence – believing in ourselves and others
  • Friendships – how to be a Friend, and maintaining Friends
  • Mindfulness – including inspirational Quotes and Positive Affirmations
  • Kindness and Respect

The Committee meets on a weekly basis via Zoom currently. It is a Staff guided process. The group is looking forward to in person meetings once again so it can be Participant guided with Staff support when needed.
