This past weekend, the Self Advocates leadership team—Avery with Luma 🐾, Krista, and Daniela—alongside staff members Heather, Shea, and Kyle, had the incredible opportunity to attend the Speaking Out Conference in beautiful Port Elgin 🌊.
Hosted at the welcoming Unifor Family Education Centre, the group spent Saturday and Sunday immersed in a weekend of learning, sharing, and connection 🤝. Throughout the conference, attendees heard from a variety of inspiring presenters who shared powerful stories of resilience, advocacy, and personal growth 🌱. These sessions offered not only insight but also interactive opportunities for participants to share their own experiences and engage in meaningful, hands-on learning activities. Each activity added valuable tools to their advocacy toolboxes 🧰, empowering them to continue making a difference in their communities.
One of the most impactful aspects of the weekend was hearing firsthand accounts of individuals overcoming barriers—whether physical, social, or systemic—and achieving the goals they had set for themselves 🎯. It was a moving reminder of the strength found in community and the importance of lifting each other up 🙌. The Speaking Out Conference truly brought together a group of empowering individuals, all united in their mission to inspire and support one another.
Beyond the presentations, the weekend was filled with moments of joy and connection. The group had a blast at Friday night’s dance 💃, where Krista and Daniela kicked things off by getting everyone out on the dance floor! Laughter and music filled the room as new friendships were formed and old ones rekindled. Saturday’s games night 🎲 was another highlight, bringing everyone together for some lighthearted fun and friendly competition. And both nights were filled with cheers as everyone came together to cheer on the Toronto Blue Jays ⚾, adding a spirited and celebratory vibe to the evenings!
A heartfelt thank you goes out to the Unifor Family Education Centre for their warm hospitality. The grounds were beautiful 🌳, the staff were incredibly kind, and the food was absolutely delicious—no one left hungry! 😋
